How to Set Up and Connect Your Solar Panel Blanket

Modified on Sun, 27 Apr at 11:31 PM

Solar panel blankets are a fantastic solution for generating clean energy when you’re on the move, whether camping, overlanding, or preparing for emergencies. Lightweight, foldable, and easy to use, they can quickly provide the power you need for your devices, batteries, or appliances. Here's a simple guide to help you set up and connect your solar panel blanket correctly.

What You’ll Need:

  • Solar panel blanket

  • Solar charge controller (if not built-in)

  • Battery or portable power station

  • Extension cables (optional, for longer distances)

  • Anderson plugs, alligator clips, or correct adapters

Step-by-Step Setup:

1. Choose the Right Location

Find a sunny, unobstructed area to lay out your solar panel blanket. Avoid shady spots or areas that might get shadowed throughout the day (like near trees or buildings).

Tip: Position the blanket at the best angle facing the sun — typically 30–45 degrees for most regions.

2. Unfold the Solar Blanket

Carefully unfold the solar blanket. Lay it flat or prop it up with a stand or by leaning it against a surface, depending on your model.

3. Connect to the Charge Controller

If your solar panel doesn’t have a built-in charge controller:

  • Connect the panel’s output cables to the input terminals of your charge controller.

  • Always double-check polarity — positive (+) to positive, negative (-) to negative.

4. Connect to Your Battery or Power Station

From the output side of the charge controller:

  • Connect the appropriate adapter (alligator clips, Anderson plugs, etc.) to your battery terminals or into your portable power station.

  • Make sure the connection is secure and that the battery voltage matches the solar panel output requirements.

5. Monitor and Adjust

Once connected, check the charge controller display (if it has one) to ensure it's charging properly. Adjust the blanket's angle throughout the day to maximise sun exposure.

Safety Tips:

  • Never connect the panel directly to a battery without a charge controller unless the panel is specifically designed for that.

  • Keep cables tidy and out of high-traffic areas to avoid tripping or accidental disconnection.

  • Fold and store the blanket safely after use to protect the cells and wiring.
