Why Is My MPPT Solar Controller Showing 0W or Not Charging the Battery?

Modified on Thu, 26 Mar at 1:55 AM

If your MPPT controller is showing 0W, 0A, or not charging your battery, this does not always mean it is faulty.

In most cases, it’s caused by setup, wiring, or environmental conditions.

? Most Common Causes

☀️ 1. Not Enough Sunlight

  • Early morning / late afternoon
  • Cloud cover
  • Panels shaded

? MPPT may show 0W if input is too low

? 2. Battery Is Already Fully Charged

  • Controller reduces or stops charging
  • This is normal behaviour

? 3. Incorrect Wiring Order

MPPT must be connected in this order:

  1. Battery first
  2. Then solar panels

⚠️ Incorrect order can cause controller issues

⚡ 4. Loose or Faulty Connections

Check:

  • MC4 connectors
  • Battery terminals
  • Fuses / isolators

? 5. Controller Protection Mode

Controller may stop charging due to:

  • Over-voltage
  • Over-temperature
  • Reverse polarity
  • Battery protection

? 6. Battery Voltage Too Low or Too High

If battery is:

  • Too low → controller may not start
  • Too high → charging stops

? 7. Incorrect Settings (Lithium vs AGM)

Wrong battery profile can stop proper charging.

? 8. PV Voltage Too Low

Panel voltage must exceed battery voltage.

? Example:

  • 18V panel → OK for 12V system
  • Low light → may drop below usable range

? Quick Test

  1. Check panel voltage (multimeter)
  2. Check battery voltage
  3. Confirm controller display/app
  4. Disconnect and reconnect correctly

⚠️ When It Might Be a Fault

Possible fault if:

  • Full sun + correct wiring
  • Battery not full
  • Still 0W

? Contact support with:

  • Photos of setup
  • Controller model
  • Voltage readings

❓ FAQ

Why does it work sometimes but not always?

Usually sunlight or battery state.

Why does it show voltage but 0W?

Not enough current or battery is full.

Do MPPT controllers turn off?

They enter standby when no charge needed.

? Summary

A 0W reading is usually normal and caused by:

  • Low sunlight
  • Full battery
  • Wiring/setup issue

Always check these before assuming a fault.
